History

The Society for the Promotion of Real Magic was founded on December 5, 1974, at 11:55pm, by a small group of toads and a toad-like human baby.

In the early years, group members studied magic through the works of C. S. Lewis, E. Nesbit, J. R. R. Tolkien, Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, Diana Wynne Jones, and more. As our studies deepened, our confusion grew: where were the magic rings, otherworldly portals, talking animals, sentient trees, thousand year-old wish-granting creatures, cursèd artifacts, celebrity swords, and ghostly robots we were promised? Where were the thrilling adventures that ended before teatime? Where were the hags dispensing cryptic wisdom at the side of the road?

And so the S.P.R.M.’s Real Work began.

Mission statement

The Society for the Promotion of Real Magic is a multispecies coalition dedicated to promoting, supporting, and creating Real Magic in the Real World. What is Real Magic? You tell me.
